Morehead City's 8-Hour Bottom Fishing Bonanza

Ready to drop some lines and haul up some real beauties? Captain Jeffrey Gaskill's got you covered with this 8-hour bottom fishing trip out of Morehead City. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your feet wet, this trip's perfect for anyone looking to tangle with some hard-fighting bottom dwellers. We're talking Black Seabass, Triggerfish, and a whole host of other species that call these waters home. So grab your sunscreen and let's hit the deep!

What's the Deal?

Alright, here's the scoop. You're in for a full day of fishing - we're talking 8 solid hours on the water. Captain Jeffrey knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he's got all the gear you need to make this trip a success. No need to fuss with rods, reels, or bait - it's all taken care of. Your job? Show up ready to fish, bring some grub to keep you going (trust me, you'll work up an appetite), and maybe pack a cooler for your catch. The boat's got room for four, so bring your buddies or make some new ones. It's all about having a good time and hopefully landing some tasty fish for dinner.

How We Roll on the Water

Bottom fishing is all about patience and precision. We'll be dropping lines down to where the big boys hang out - we're talking depths of 60 to 200 feet or more. Captain Jeffrey will use his fish finder to locate the hot spots, usually around structure like reefs or wrecks. Once we're in position, it's time to bait up and drop down. We typically use cut bait or squid on circle hooks - these are great for bottom fishing because they tend to hook fish in the corner of the mouth, making for an easier release if needed. You'll want to keep a tight line and be ready for that telltale tug. When you feel it, give it a good hook set and start reeling! It's a workout, but man, is it worth it when you see that flash of color coming up from the deep.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Black Sea Bass are one of our prime targets on this trip. These guys are aggressive feeders and put up a great fight for their size. They typically range from 1 to 5 pounds, but we occasionally hook into some real monsters. Black Sea Bass love structure, so we often find them around reefs and wrecks. They're most active in the cooler months, but we can catch them year-round. And let me tell you, they make for some fantastic eating - white, flaky meat that's perfect for a fish fry.

Grey Triggerfish are another species we love to target. These odd-looking fish are known for their hard mouths and teeth designed for crushing shellfish. Don't let their appearance fool you - they're delicious and put up a scrappy fight. Triggers typically weigh 2 to 4 pounds, but bigger ones aren't uncommon. They're most abundant in the warmer months, from late spring through fall. When you're reeling one in, keep a steady pressure - these guys are known for their last-ditch runs when they see the boat.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

Let me tell you, there's something special about bottom fishing off Morehead City. Maybe it's the anticipation as your bait sinks into the depths, or the sudden jolt when a big one takes the hook. Could be the variety - you never know what you might pull up next. One minute you're wrestling with a chunky Black Sea Bass, the next you're admiring the vivid colors of a Vermilion Snapper. And let's not forget the taste of fresh-caught fish for dinner. But I think what really keeps folks coming back is the whole experience - a day on the water, away from the hustle and bustle, just you, your friends, and the fish. It's hard to beat that.

Time to Book Your Spot

So, what do you say? Ready to get out there and see what's biting? This 8-hour trip with Captain Jeffrey Gaskill is your ticket to some of the best bottom fishing Morehead City has to offer. Whether you're looking to fill the freezer or just want to experience the thrill of battling some hard-fighting fish, this trip's got you covered. Remember, all the gear's provided, so all you need to bring is your sense of adventure (and maybe a sandwich or two). Spots fill up fast, especially during peak season, so don't wait too long to book. Give Swan Point Charters a call and get ready for a day of fishing you won't forget. Trust me, once you feel that first big hit, you'll be hooked!

Black Sea Bass

Black Sea Bass are tough little fighters that'll give you a run for your money. These bottom-dwellers usually hang out around rocky areas, wrecks, and reefs in waters up to 120 feet deep. Most weigh under 4 pounds, but some bruisers can hit 8 pounds or more. Late spring to summer is prime time, when they move inshore. You'll find 'em congregating near structures like jetties and piers. What's cool about these fish is they're all born female and some switch to male later on. They put up a solid fight until they break the surface. For tackle, go with a medium-weight rod, 6-8 feet, and 20-30 pound line. They'll bite on squid, fish strips, or artificial lures. Folks love targeting them for their tasty white meat. Here's a local tip: when you're bottom fishing, keep your bait moving slightly. A little twitch now and then can trigger a strike from a curious sea bass. Just remember, the season runs February 1-28 and May 15 through December 31.

Grey Triggerfish

Grey Triggerfish are some real characters out on the reefs. These tough little fish typically grow to about 17 inches, but can hit two feet if you're lucky. You'll find them lurking around hard bottoms, ledges, and reefs, usually in waters up to 180 feet deep. They're known for their sharp teeth and leather-like skin. When threatened, they'll wedge themselves into crevices and lock their dorsal fins – good luck getting them out! They're clever feeders too, often following larger fish to snatch up the leftovers. Triggerfish put up a scrappy fight and make for good eating. To catch 'em, use a heavy sinker to get down deep, and try squid for bait – it stays on the hook better. Here's a trick: when you feel a bite, reel fast. These guys like to nibble before committing, so you've got to be quick. Best time to target them is during warmer months when they're more active. Just be ready for a tussle – these fish have attitude to spare and won't come in easy.
