Captain Jeffrey Gaskill knows these Morehead City waters like the back of his hand, and he's ready to show you exactly where the cobia hang out. This 6-hour charter takes you into some of the most productive inshore waters along North Carolina's Crystal Coast, where these bronze-backed bruisers cruise the shallows looking for their next meal. With space for up to 4 anglers, this trip strikes the perfect balance between personal attention and shared excitement when someone hooks into a fish that can easily stretch 30-40 pounds or more.
Your day starts early at the Morehead City waterfront, where Captain Jeffrey will have the boat rigged and ready to hunt cobia. These fish are visual feeders, so you'll spend your time scanning the surface for those distinctive dark shapes cruising just under the water. The captain's got years of experience reading these waters, from the nearshore reefs to the shallow flats where cobia love to patrol. You'll move between spots based on conditions, tides, and where the bait is holding. The boat comes equipped with everything you need - rods, reels, tackle, and bait - so you can focus on the fishing instead of worrying about gear. Captain Jeffrey's approach is hands-on but relaxed, making sure everyone gets their shot at a fish while keeping the atmosphere fun and pressure-free.
Cobia fishing is all about spotting and casting, which makes it one of the most exciting forms of inshore angling. You'll be using medium-heavy spinning gear with live bait like blue crabs, eels, or pinfish - whatever the cobia are keyed in on that day. Captain Jeffrey will position the boat so you can make accurate casts to cruising fish, often within sight of structure like channel markers, buoys, or nearshore wrecks where cobia congregate. The technique requires patience and quick reflexes - you might spend time scanning empty water before suddenly spotting a school of fish moving your way. When that happens, it's game time. The captain will coach you through the cast, helping you lead the fish properly and work your bait in a way that triggers a strike. The fights are typically long and strong, with cobia known for their bulldogging runs and stubborn resistance.
"Captain Jeffrey really made sure we had the best experience on our charter. Not only was he able to put us on the fish, he was also great with our son! I highly recommend Swan Point Charters for anyone who has a love for fishing and the water- you'll have a blast!" - Kirsten
Cobia are hands-down one of the most sought-after inshore species along the North Carolina coast, and for good reason. These fish typically run between 20-50 pounds in local waters, though bigger specimens over 60 pounds show up regularly during peak season. They're recognizable by their dark brown coloration, white belly, and distinctive flat head that gives them an almost shark-like appearance from above. Cobia are most active from late April through October, with the best action happening during the warmer months when they move into shallow water to feed and spawn. What makes them so exciting to target is their aggressive nature once hooked - they'll make long, powerful runs and aren't shy about diving for structure or the bottom. They're also excellent table fare, with firm white meat that's perfect for grilling or blackening. The sight-fishing aspect adds another dimension to the experience, as you'll often see the fish before you cast to them, creating an interactive hunting experience that gets your adrenaline pumping.
Captain Jeffrey's reputation for putting anglers on cobia speaks for itself, and his patient teaching style makes this trip perfect for families or first-time cobia hunters. The 6-hour format gives you plenty of time to cover water, learn the techniques, and hopefully connect with multiple fish. Morehead City's location provides access to diverse cobia habitat, from the shallow flats of Core Sound to the nearshore structure that attracts baitfish and the predators that follow them. With Captain Jeffrey handling the navigation and fish-finding, you can focus on the fun part - making the cast and fighting the fish. Book your guided cobia trip today and get ready to experience some of the best sight-fishing action the Crystal Coast has to offer.

Cobia are some of the most rewarding fish you'll target in our waters. These dark brown bruisers average around 30-50 pounds, but don't be surprised if we hook into something pushing 80+ pounds. What makes them special is their aggressive nature and powerful runs - they'll test your tackle and give you a real workout. We find them around structure like reefs, wrecks, and buoys, typically in 30-70 feet of water. Spring through early fall is prime time when they're moving through our area. Cobia are often solitary, so we do a lot of sight fishing, spotting them cruising just under the surface. The fight is incredible - they're strong, stubborn fish that don't give up easily. Plus, they're outstanding table fare with firm, white meat that's hard to beat. Here's a local tip: when you see one, there might be others nearby. They sometimes follow rays and sharks, so keep your eyes open for that telltale shadow moving below.
